For Sale: Vintage (Pre-1960) OA and NJ patches
John Charles Martin was born in Merced, CA in 1944, the only child of
Charles and Laura Fox Martin. John was an Eagle Scout and a member of the
Order of the Arrow, Yo-Se-Mite Lodge. He attended the 1960 National
Jamboree in Colorado Springs. While there he put together an extensive
patch collection, including a large number of OA pocket flaps. Also
included were many National Jamboree patches from the 1950, ’53, ’57, and
’60 Jamborees. In addition, he acquired many Council patches, including
several National Jamboree Council shoulder patches. John earned a total
of 30 merit badges, and continued to be active in Boy Scouts and
Explorers until he graduated High School.
In August 1968, 2LT John C. Martin died in Viet Nam. His name is on “the
Wall”.
John’s widowed mother died in 1989. His patch collection was given to me
by the executor of her estate. I also acquired John’s Eagle awards and
merit badge sash. At the time I was a Webelos leader, and soon after
Scoutmaster of a troop in Converse, Texas. I have kept the collection
intact, and used to display it occasionally at Scout functions. I am no
longer a Scout leader, and my sons are all grown. This collection needs
a home (or homes) where it can be viewed and appreciated. Interested in
selling intact, but for now will also sell individual patches upon
request.
